Finding the right veggies to plant at the right times can be really difficult and some times overwhelming when scrolling through the internet.

So I thought I would give you a few suggestions of what grows really well when planted in "Spring"

  1. Carrots - these are super easy to grow and are almost like a set and forget plant. We chose to plant to rows of carrots this year from seedlings rather than seeds and they absolutely have taken off. Be sure to leave sufficient space between each plant as they are a root plant they don't like being over crowded. Baby Carrots are an excellent alternative if you have a raised garden bed or LARGE pot

  2. Cucumbers - we have two varieties growing at the moment Lebanese and patio. These are easiest to manage when grown on a climbing frame. Cucumbers are another veggie that grows well in pots if training to climb

  3. Tomatoes - best planted once the frost has subsided we planted our seedlings at the beginning of October and they have grown astronomically. The Cherry Bomb variety is perfect for large pots and a climbing frame. They are also very quick growers and once they begin to flower liquid fertiliser provides an excellent boost.

  4. Butternut Pumpkin - we are actually growing our butternut pumpkin in a large half wine barrel with plenty of drainage. when provided enough water and space pumpkins grow quite quickly and can be trained to climb. If you do climb the vines be sure to support any pumpkins whilst they are growing with a "sling" so that the weight doesn't break the vine.

  5. Snow Peas - Snow peas are super easy and take up barely any space. We planted ours at the beginning of spring and are about to harvest our first crop from them. We have trained our snow peas to climb therefor taking up minimal space in the veggie patch

  6. Pak Choi - if you love to cook asian style meals I highly suggest planting pak choi a the end of winter begging of spring. We are only in the first week of November and have already had 3 harvests.

  7. Strawberries - make sure you are waiting until the last frost before planting your strawberries as they like to have warm roots for optimum growth. Strawberries can feel like they aren't going to flower for quite some time and then overnight you will have 4 strawberries beginning to sprout so stay patient and be sure to give plenty of water

  8. Blueberries - best grown in majority shade with partial sun and do excellently in large pots. I like to liquid fertilise once a week now since the plant began to flower.

  9. Basil - Who doesn't love a spaghetti Bolognese with basil in it. This fragrant plant is virtually set and forget and grows excellently with little attendance

  10. Mint - make sure you are planting your mint in a large seperate pot as it is a extremely fast grower it can quickly take over your veggie patch stealing nutrients from the plants around it.

Tip: If you are slightly impatient like me, try purchasing seedlings over seeds to "speed up" the growing to harvest period. Plus it makes it feel like the veggie patch is alive well before anything is actually "growing"

Happy growing!
